Workaround: You can mitigate this issue by restarting your Windows device. Resolution: This issue was resolved in updates released December 13, KB and later. We recommend you install the latest security update for your device. It contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.
If you are using an update released before December 13, , and have this issue, you can resolve it by installing and configuring the special Group Policy listed below. Important: You will need to install and configure the Group Policy for your version of Windows to resolve this issue. Re-using the account was blocked by security policy. This issue originates with the October security updates KB which introduced some hardening changes enabled by default for domain join.
Please see KB - Netjoin: Domain join hardening changes to understand the new designed behavior. Affected scenarios include some domain join or re-imaging operations where a computer account was created or pre-staged by a different identity than the identity used to join or re-join the computer to the domain.

The screenshots in this section show Windows 10 October 20H2 Update because I wrote this guide when Windows 10 20H2 update was released. The Windows 10 Update assistant will start downloading. Wait for the file to finish downloading. If you are using Google Chrome or the new Microsoft Egge, the file download progress will be displayed on the bottom left of the browser. To confirm compatibility, the update assistant will run some checks on your computer.
The page below will be displayed if the PC is compatible with the new Windows 10 update. While the update is downloading, you can minimize the update assistant and continue using your computer as normal.
The download will take a while. When the update is fully downloaded, you will be able to install the latest Windows 10 update manually — when I wrote this guide, the latest update was 20H2. When the update is fully downloaded, the update assistant will start updating your PC to the latest Windows 10 update. When the update completes the first phase of the installation, you will be prompted to restart your PC immediately.
The update assistant will also initiate a minute countdown. If you do not select an option, after the count down, your PC will restart, and the update will start installing.
